CORONAVIRUS DISCLAIMER: Using this homemade hand sanitizer with amazing essential oils is not a guarantee that will not get in contract with COVID-19 (coronavirus), have it and/or spread it around. It’s important to stay cautious by continuing to wash your hands frequently, clean the surfaces you’re in contact with on a daily basis (light switches, doorknobs, kitchen, bathroom, office desk). Protect yourself but also protect others. Now let’s get back to our regularly scheduled blog post full of Milk & Honey vibes.

HEY HONEYS! I HOPE ALL IS WELL & SWEET 🍯

If we had to pick the top 5 words/phrases to describe 2020-2021 (and maybe two years to come 😩), I think these would be it:

  1. Quarantine
  2. Face masks 😷 (not the step from your skincare routine)
  3. Washing your hands
  4. 2 meters (6ft) social distancing
  5. Hand sanitizer

It’s a challenging period, and we have to do the best we can to stay safe, healthy, and protect not only ourselves but the people around us. It’s a team effort, and everybody needs to play their part.

HOW TO MAKE EO HAND SANITIZER

I don’t know about you, but I never liked using hand sanitizer. However, as a DIY product enthusiast, I knew I could make my own at home with simple ingredients and add my favorites essential oils in it (also a huge essential oil enthusiast 🙋🏾). Oh, I forgot to mention, you will save money! Those cute (and tiny) hand sanitizer bottles sold at your local drugstore are not cheap…

HAND SANITIZER GEL INGREDIENTS

To make hand sanitizer, you only need 3 ingredients. The most important ingredients are isopropyl alcohol (no vodka, keep it for the cocktails 😉), hydrogen peroxide and glycerin.

Here are the ingredients we’ll be using to get a good, and effective EO hand sanitizer:

(NOT USING ALCOHOL IS NOT AN OPTION!)

But are those simple ingredients EFFECTIVE? Yes, they are! Let me explain why.

1. ALOE VERA GEL

Aloe vera is a succulent plant species of the genus Aloe. Some of its benefits are:

  • Has antibacterial properties
  • Slow down bacteria growth
  • Soothes the skin
  • Provides hydration
  • Aloe vera has a perfect texture consistency as it is a gel itself

2. ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL

Isopropyl alcohol has antiseptic properties and is commonly use in cosmetic products (lotion, aftershave products, makeup, and some skin products.

You CANNOT used vodka for your hand sanitizer because there’s not enough alcohol (you would need a 190 proof vodka).

According to my research and calculations, use alcohol with at least 80% alcohol content (the higher, the better) because the other ingredients added will dilute and decrease its percentage.

To be safe and make sure to create an effective hand sanitizer, the total alcohol content should be at least 60% (with all the ingredients together).

Yes, chemistry and calculations are involved because you change each ingredient’s concentration when you mix them together. If the alcohol concentration is lower than the other ingredients, it won’t give you a recipe that works.

3. HYDROGEN PEROXIDE

Another important ingredient for this recipe.

  • It’s a mild antiseptic
  • Reduces microbial growth
  • Safe for the skin

4. WITCH HAZEL

Witch hazel is a plant. Its parts (leaves, bark, shoot) are used to make medicine.

It’s an optional ingredient but for this homemade hand sanitizer worth using;

  • Has antibacterial properties
  • Helps with skin irritations
  • Protect skin cells

Here’s a recent research paper supporting the antibacterial activity of witch hazel.

5. ANTISEPTIC ESSENTIAL OILS

Essential oils have many benefits. One of them is that they have antiseptic properties, which means they can help slow down microbes’ growth (bacteria, fungi, and some viruses).

  1. Tea Tree Oil
  2. Peppermint Oil
  3. Frankincense Oil
  4. Lemon Oil
  5. Orange Oil

The benefits of these essential oils in your homemade hand sanitizer will help disinfect your hands:

  • Has antiseptic, antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral properties (a natural disinfectant)
  • Effective for all-purpose house cleaner (All-Purpose Spray Cleaner Recipe)
  • Great for the skin (safe, healing, anti-inflammatory, and has antioxidants)
  • They all have a pleasant scent

6. GLYCERIN

Alcohol will dry up your hands, so adding a moisturizing ingredient to the recipe will definitely help a lot!

Glycerin

  • Natural humectant (attracts moisture)
  • Has antimicrobial properties
  • It relieves dryness

HOW TO USE HAND SANITIZER?

Did I just heard you say “DUH!!”… you better keep reading!

Make sure you are using enough hand sanitizer (a bit more than a quarter size). It needs to coat all the surfaces of your hands and need to takes 15-20 seconds before drying to make sure it’s killing off bacteria.

AAANNNNDDDDDD, you need to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds when you get home!

You better do it correctly the next times!!

STORAGE & CARE FOR DIY PRODUCTS

To protect the ingredients in your DIY EO hand sanitizer, it’s important to use the proper bottle for storage. For example, the components of essential oils can be light-sensitive and heat-sensitive.

Store your DIY product in a dark glass bottle (if possible). It can be either an amber glass bottle or a cobalt blue glass bottle with a pump. But I totally understand that clear plastic bottles may be more accessible.

Always try to keep your bottle in a dry and cool area (but I’m assuming you’ll be keeping it in your purse).

Don’t forget to wash your bottle container with water and soap, then wipe it down with alcohol to sterilize it before using it.
